The Untold Story of the Largest Aquifer in the United States




Beneath the vast landscapes of the United States lies a hidden treasure, an immense underground reservoir of water known as the Ogallala Aquifer. Spanning across eight states, this aquifer plays a vital role in supporting ranching, corn, wheat, soybeans, communities, and ecosystems. Today the aquifer supplies water to around four million Americans who live within its boundaries and the aquifer is estimated to be depleted by around 10% by the 1990's. It will take 6,000 years to replenish what has been used in just a few hundred years.

The aquifer provided a lifeline, supplying water for irrigation and enabling agriculture to flourish in regions that were previously unsuitable for farming. Farmers adopted more efficient irrigation techniques, such as drip irrigation and precision watering systems, reducing water usage while maintaining crop productivity. Research institutions, the United States Geological Survey, and Dennis Gitz, physiologist with ARS collaborated to study the aquifer's hydrology and develop strategies for sustainable water management.


Looking ahead, the future of the Ogallala Aquifer remains a topic of concern and hope. Continued collaboration, innovation, and education are essential to ensure the long-term viability of this invaluable resource.
