The Piston Pump

The first piston pump was invented by Ctesibius of Alexandria, an ancient Greek engineer and inventor who lived in the 3rd century BC. Ctesibius was known for his contributions to various fields, including pneumatics and hydraulics. He designed and built the first piston pump, which was a significant advancement in fluid handling technology during that time.

Ctesibius' piston pump operated by using a reciprocating piston within a cylinder. As the piston moved up and down, it created a vacuum on the upstroke, drawing in fluid through an inlet valve, and then expelled the fluid through an outlet valve on the downstroke. This design laid the foundation for the development of more complex piston pumps in the future.

It is important to note that while Ctesibius is credited with inventing the piston pump, the design and functionality of piston pumps have been refined and improved by numerous engineers and inventors throughout history. The contributions of many individuals have played a role in shaping the piston pump technology we have today.
